"Barley pond pads under threat"
The EU garden pest has struck again! Now the use of barley straw in ponds to combat algae has been outlawed by the Government's Health and Safety Executive following a European Union ruling that requires all 'biocidal products' to be tested, at a cost of almost £200,000, and registered. This is currently impossible because although barley straw has been declared safe after years of research no one has been able to identify the active ingredient that helps keep pond water clear. Tom Pain, who runs a company supplying barley mats, says he will continue to sell them to garden centres as a general pond cleaner, removing references to algae.
